Red River Regional Council

Summer in the Red River Valley is a season of abundance. The fields are green, the crops are thriving, and the rich soil that has sustained generations continues to fuel our agricultural economy. But healthy crops don’t grow in isolation—they depend on healthy, vibrant communities.

Across our region, we see the signs of that vitality everywhere. More than 1,000 H-2A visa workers join our communities each year during the growing season, helping support one of our most important industries. Their presence reminds us that strong agriculture requires more than productive land—it requires adequate housing, quality services, and communities where people can live, work, and belong.

We’re also seeing new business growth, community investment, and an eagerness among neighbors to help one another succeed. Former residents returning home often remark on the positive changes taking place in their hometowns. There is a renewed sense of optimism throughout the region.

That momentum is especially evident in housing. Today, 15 new homes are under construction in Lakota, Larimore, Grafton, Minto, Michigan, Hoople, and Cavalier, with 10 additional homes being planned in five more communities. With every project, we continue to dispel the myth that new housing cannot be built and sold in small towns. In reality, many of these homes are selling before construction is complete.

The impact goes far beyond the new homeowner. Our experience has shown that each newly constructed home can create as many as four additional ripple moves within the community, opening housing opportunities for other families and supporting workforce growth. New homes generate excitement, community pride, and confidence. Success truly begets success.

Summer celebrations remind us why people choose to live here. From parades, street dances, and fireworks to kids riding bikes to the pool, our small towns offer a quality of life that is unmatched. Main Streets fill with music and laughter, family gatherings stretch late into the evening, and communities come together to celebrate both their heritage and their future.

As we continue sharing the vision of The Reyleck and its potential to bring more locally produced foods to our tables, we are reminded that economic development is ultimately about people. Whether it’s growing crops, building homes, opening businesses, or celebrating community traditions, the future of the Red River Valley is being built on the same foundation that has always defined us: hard work, strong relationships, and pride in the place we call home.

We invite you to be part of that future. Attend a local celebration, support a small business, welcome a new neighbor, learn more about The Reyleck, or explore opportunities to invest, build, and grow in our communities. Together, we can continue creating the housing, workforce, and quality of life needed to ensure the Red River Valley remains a place where families, businesses, and communities thrive for generations to come.
